In class today, as a group we were able to plan out or visual for this project. As you can see in the picture, we accomplished a lot and have an idea as to what we are going to do for this project. The topic we have chosen is parkouring and our visual for this will be a video. Today we came up with the different parts of our video. First, before we show our video we will present it and give some insight as to what parkouring is and the steps we will have gone through to complete the video. So to make the video, we are first going to have a clip of people participating in more of an intense parkouring activity; which will entertain our classmates and show them what parkouring is really about. Entertainment is one of our main goals of making this video, the clip is meant to do that but also be very informative. Then the next part of the video will star everyone in our group performing different parts of parkour, somewhat mocking the real video, because obviously none of us are trained or skilled enough to actually parkour off of buildings. This part of the video is meant to be more comical and still used to keep the class entertained. This will be in line with what we just learned about with parody, taking serious piece and making it more humorous. Then once we have completed the filming, we will put all of the videos together. We will add music, speed up and slow down different parts of the video, we will be using special effects to enhance our video and make it make it more enjoyable to watch. Planning most of the details out in class really helped our group and will definitely make our project better. Writing down our ideas and getting every group members input on our project was very useful because it gives us somewhere to start but it also allows for everyone in the group to have a say in how the project will turn out. This helped us because all our ideas are in one place and we have an outline for our project. Having an outline for this project is key because it will guide our work and make things r run more smoothly. Now when we take action we will be able to check off what we have done and we will also be able to use our time more effectively because we already know what must get done. What I learned from todays class was, when working in groups you all must be on the same page, and creating an outline and sharing ideas is a great way to make sure that you all want the same thing for the project. With completing a brainstorming session, it will guide the groups work for the rest of the project. I believe that spending the time today to complete an outline was time well spent, and very useful and helpful for our project.
In class on Tuesday me and my group extensively went over our subject of parkouring. We had talked about what we had wanted to do, but nobody really followed through on any of it. We sat down and were given crayons and colored pencils to plan and plot our ideas out on a big piece of paper. We didn’t really know where to begin since all we had in front of us was a big blank piece of paper and some half-baked ideas. We consulted our instructor and he suggested we begin with a bubble graph or a storyboard of some sort. Since the environment felt very a little like public school, I guess that is what made us begin with using the simple bubble graph. Once we started drawing out what we wanted to do, our conversations became livelier and our ideas became more concrete. We knew we wanted our visual aspect to be a video so we began with drawing that out and then adding what we wanted to do. We knew we wanted to do clips from Youtube featuring parkouring, but in that conversation we also brought up the idea of making our version of parkouring parodying it since no one in our group has the athletic ability, balance, or guts to do hard core parkouring. We mentioned pictures and music briefly, but then decided those things were more side notes and could be added and discussed later. So inspired by our idea of parody we moved away from the bubble graph and to a simple list paraphrasing and outlining what we wanted to do within our video. We planned out that we wanted to meet this Friday and parkour (in our special watered down way) at Metcalf School or some other park. We then were given a notecard and told to describe what we wanted our project to do in one word. On the blue notecard we were given we wrote words like “informtative”, “uplifting”, “visual effects”, and “entertaining”. Then our notecards were shuffled around and we were to grab a different color and meet with our new little groups to discuss our group projects. I felt a little more confident within our project since the other groups seemed so abstract with one chronicling a trip to Italy, another exploring Disney movies, and a another group was “Finding Nemo” from the diver’s perspective as opposed to that cute little clownfish we have come to love. It was comforting to know that we had structure and an original idea. Our excitement for the project built once we got back in our groups again. We listened for the most part to our instructor’s closing comments as we followed our elementary school instincts and started to color a picture on the paper. One of us drew out two buildings appearing to be Tri Towers, someone else drew a picture of what appeared to be a bar and a stick person jumping off, and a third person drew an autumn tree.
Tuesday class comprised of our group formulating a action plan of attempting to Parkour. We as a group decided to make a film and during class conducted a step by step guide to help us produce an effective, informative yet humorous short video. Obviously we can not perform the more difficult array of stunts but on the other hand from the knowledge we have gathered throughout research, we realize, parkouring starts small and with practice the level off difficulty increases. Our plan of action includes the type of music, the location, stunts and a variety of different movements and tones we will set. In order to portray the humorous side of our video we decided to start with real hard core Parkour and then show short clips of our group mocking them. I think this will capture the audiences attention and with their attention it will be easier for we as a group to inform them on our chosen subject. This ties nicely in to the parody of taking a serious complex subject and making it broad and humorous. This class helped with the outline of our project and gave us a general idea of what direction we are headed towards as a group. We were able to establish the goals of our group and set times to work on our project together. This class also taught us how it is important to brainstorm ideas and not have to use the internet all the time to have ideas and be creative.
We also had note cards to read and comment on, on ways in which it related back to our topic and joined a whole new group to discuss these cards. This was helpful and informative but did interfere with our outline plan as we were on a 'role'. In these groups the discussion lead to each person describing the card they had and how it effects their group. Listening to the members speak about how it related to their own topic was positive and informative and I think gave our group some tips on what other groups are trying to portray. With the end of class nearing, we had almost completed a schedule and plan for what needs to be done, how we will go about doing it in order to be successful and in general we worked as a team we were able to reach positive educational decisions on our project.
In class on Thursday, our group worked to plan out what our project would want to have in it and what we would have to do to make it the best project we could. If you look at the picture, you will see we have accomplished a lot in the time we had to do it. We took the time to work together to get somethings planned out. I feel like this helped because we were all able to visually see what the out come of our project would be. It was also a good thing because we all agreed on what our overall goal for this project’s outcome. We have to decided to make this an entertaining and some what comical video, but it will also be informative. By being entertaining it will keep our classmates focused on it and they will get something out of it. To do this we will use imovie and use videos of actual parkouring. Then we will use our own attempt parkouring or mock parkouring video and add some special effects: such as speeding it the video up, slowing it down, rewinding it, and add some awesome music in the background to make it seem super intense. To come to all of that it was started with the planning we did in class. I feel like that helped me learn how to get everything to be planned and started instead of just staring at a blank screen trying to start from nothing. Also, during class we all wrote what our videos wanted to show. I think many of the other visuals will be good, but they are much different from the over all goal we have. I think that by showing other classmates plans it really put what we wanted to do out there. That helped me learn that well other people have good ideas it is good to stick with your gut and original plan and go for what you want even if it is different. Our project is not some made up story and it is more of an informational video with a different and entertaining twist, because who would want to sit and watch people jump off of buildings and then talk about how dangerous it is and everything bad about it. I think that with us actually using our own video it will show people that we could actually do some of this stuff, not as well as the professionals, but it just takes some time to get. We do not have that time, so I am sure that it will be quite comical and keep everyone interested. I feel overall I learned that when working on a project like this you all have to work together and see one out come instead of many. It is easier to see one out come when it is all out there on paper. I also feel like it helps in the process of making the project and being able to figure out what you want to do with one idea, which kind of reiterates the sentence about the out come of the whole project, but you need one before the other.
