Parkour is an extreme sport and should be treated like any other extreme sport safety wise. There is always the unknown of what can happen in a sport, but it could result in serious injury if the person does a skill they do not have the physical training for. When a person Parkours it is all about the risk and the rush of adrenaline you get when you do it. However, many injuries can result.

Types of injuries

The types of injuries can be overuse or acute. I will later go on the explain what type of injuries goes into each category of injuries. First, however, I want to stress that the risks of parkour are just like the risk of any other extreme sport and if you do not know what you are doing when practicing parkour or you do not have the skills needed to possess the tricks in parkour then your risk of injury is much higher than the rest.

Acute injuries: These injuries are usually caused by a sudden trauma. Common injuries for a trained athlete could be anything from a bruise, sprain, strain, to a fractured bone. Although those do not sound that bad depending on what you fracture, strain, sprain, or bruise, they can result in serious in a serious injury. Injuries to the back, neck, head, or growth plates could be very serious. Any of these can result in paralysis or if you injure a growth plate it could result in the bone not being able to grow. If you do not take any of these injuries seriously they could only develop into a more serious problem.

Overuse injuries: These injuries are ones that develop over time, while they are not acute and the pain is not as extreme, they still cause a lot of problems in the ends. The injuries that could result from overuse are minor fractures, minimal muscle tears, and bone deformities. In the long run an of these could result in a lifetime of pain and hardship.
